Jan van den Top/The Superior Group Inc. Endowed Scholarship
Jan van den Top, P.E. is a mechanical engineer and is the president and corporate manager of The Superior Group Inc., one of the major mechanical contractors in Alaska.
Mr. van den Top received his mechanical engineering degree in the Netherlands. He came to Alaska in 1969. In these early years, he worked as a mechanical design engineer for several Anchorage consulting firms. In 1973, he received a Master of Science degree in engineering management from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
He joined Superior Plumbing and Heating Inc. in 1978. Since then, the company has grown tenfold and became The Superior Group Inc. It is now 100 percent owned by its Employee Stock Ownership Plan, which is major step to ensure the company’s survival.
Most recently, The Superior Group Inc. completed the Matanuska-Susitna Regional Hospital and the conversion of Fort Richardson’s steam district heating system to provide individual heat for all buildings. Mr. van den Top prepared the competitive proposals for Honeywell Inc. and negotiated the details. He then organized the team that performed the project and finished the job on time. Another major project he negotiated and organized was the new Arctic Slope Regional Corporation’s office building on C Street in Anchorage.
Mr. van den Top has been an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) since 1975, and he is a past president and the current historian. He is a management trustee on the Alaska Plumbers and Pipefitting Industry Pension Trust Fund and the Health and Welfare Trust for Mechanical Contractors Association of Alaska. He also serves on the negotiating and contract arbitration committee.
Mr. van den Top resides in South Anchorage with his wife Jeri.
