Gary Kobayashi Engineering Scholarship

Gary Martin Kobayashi was born Jan. 30, 1953, in Los Angeles, California. He moved to Anchorage with his parents in 1965 and graduated from West Anchorage High School in 1971. He attended Purdue University. Kobayashi worked for the Alaska Department of Transportation for 28 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Elks Club.

His family wrote: “Gary enjoyed baseball, golf and bowling. He was an avid baseball fan whose overall knowledge of the game made him a pleasure to be around when talking about baseball. Some of his fondest memories were going to Dodger Stadium on warm summer nights with his dad to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers play. Gary also loved to play golf when he could fit it into his busy summer construction schedule. He also bowled for many years in the Mountain View Lions Bowling League. Gary loved watching college basketball and had the unique talent to be able to pick out the young college players who would later turn into NBA stars. He also loved music of all kinds. Gary possessed a wonderful sense of humor and had the ability to make people feel comfortable talking to him.”

Kobayashi passed away in 2004.
