David B. and Mary E. Carlson Endowment

David and Mary Carlson were longtime residents of Dillingham, Alaska.

Mary Emily Carlson was born Sept. 8, 1900, in Ontario, Canada. She graduated from the Philadelphia College of the Bible with a degree in nursing. She married David B. Carlson, a successful businessman in Dillingham, in 1941.

Mrs. Carlson was a registered nurse who worked at the Alaska Native (Kanakanak) Hospital in Dillingham for the U.S. Public Health Service. She played the organ at her church for several years. Mrs. Carlson died April 28, 1994.

The Carlsons were concerned about the difficulty in attracting qualified nursing personnel to work in Bristol Bay communities and created the David B. & Mary E. Carlson Scholarship.
